GETTING READY FOR THE BIG DAY
Moving can be really stressful and a very busy time and involves lot of planning. It’s good to have a list of what needs to be done and organized into steps. That way you’ll feel prepared and ready for the big day.
PACKING IN ADVANCE
Start as early as you can leading up to your move. At least 2 weeks in advance is a good place to start, packing room by room and packing the least essential items first.
LABEL THOSE BOXES
It’s good to label every box so that you will eliminate any confusion when it comes time to unpack. It’s also great to take an inventory of each box, you can add a note to the box with the content.
TAKE PICTURES OF ELECTRONICS
By taking pictures of the back of all your electronics you’ll be able to easily install them in your new home. Some of the electronics for example might be DVD players, TVs, computers, etc.
PACK AN OVERNIGHT BAG
Consider packing an overnight bag and taking it with you in your car during the move. In this bag you should pack important personal documents, jewelry and a clean set of clothes.
In case you have a day between moving out of your old home and into the new home. You’ll have clean clothes and all the important documents and other personal items you need.
STORE ITEMS CORRECTLY
Packing breakable items in bubble wrap and/or packing paper is very important. You want to make sure nothing gets damaged during your move. If you can, store electronics in the boxes they came in.
THE RIGHT SIZE BOX
Try packing heavier items in the smaller boxes and the lighter ones in the larger boxes. This will make carrying them a lot easier, for you and your movers.
PACK ROOM BY ROOM
You have a whole house to pack and it can be overwhelming to think about everything you need to pack. Start by going room by room and start with the least essential ones first. Try ending with your kitchen since you’ll need to use your kitchen a lot leading up to the move or pack it in stages.
And that way you’ll be both organized and the process will go by a lot faster. As I mentioned above, it also helps to not leave packing until the last minute and give yourself a few weeks.
HIRE MOVERS
Having movers can really help with the big day, especially if you have a lot to move. Make sure you do your research and get estimates in writing, this way you can make sure there are no mix-ups when it comes to the cost of the move.
CHANGE THE LOCKS
This is optional but not a bad idea. Some homeowners feel more comfortable and want new locks and keys. And if you choose to do this you might want to also consider changing your garage code.
YOUR FIRST NIGHT
Congratulations you’ve successfully moved into your dream home. Now it’s time to settle in and get used to your new space. Depending on the season you will want to make sure either the heat or air conditioning has been turned on.
Don’t worry about getting completely unpacked in one night, take your time. Unpacking will take a couple of days or more. You might change your mind about where the furniture is or where you want to hang that picture. Enjoy your first night and relax, you’ve just moved, this is exciting.
